Music Production
Degree
Is it absolutely necessary to have a
music production degree to
make money in the music business? I am emailed this question
a lot by fellow producers and the answer is simply
NO!
I have not stepped foot in a class room
that has a music teacher professor or anything else for that
matter.
Everything I have learned came from the
streets.
What I mean by that is I have a self taught education in
music production.
College is not a bad place to be to learn some structure and
to teach discipline. I'm just saying that it's not necessary to
succeed.
If I had to fill out a resume right now about my music
career it would read something like this.
- 3 years - Mars Music, Marietta, Georgia
- 4 years - Guitar Center, Smyrna and Atlanta
Georgia
- 2 years - Alesis QS6
- 1 Year Roland XP-30
- 2 1/2 years - Roland Fantom X6
- 6 years - Roland JV 2080
- 3 years - Korg Triton
- 2 years - Korg Trinity
- 6 months - Korg Karma
- 5 years - EMU MP-7
- 2 years - Cakewalk
- 4 years - Cubase 3 SX
- 4 years - IK Multimedia T-Raxx
- 4 years - IK Multimedia Sampletank
- 6 years - Fruity Loops
- 2 years - Master Tracks Pro
- 2 years - MPC-1000
- 7 years - MPC-3000
- 3 years -Korg D1600 digital Recorder
- 4 years - Yamaha - Motif
hell this can go on forever...
You know what I'm saying here though. I have learned all
that I know by teaching myself or learning bits and pieces from
other producers.
Taking courses is great but start learning yourself by
watching online video like Youtube. Music college could never
teach you some of the things they show on the Internet.
No program you pay for anywhere in the world can substitute
for ground work knowledge acquired by a producer in the
trenches.
This is the type of education that will propel you into the
atmosphere of
big money monthly.
