What do music producers do

The other day I built my Facebook page and all of my friends from high school were asking me the same question about how I get my money. I told them that I own a production company in Atlanta called Marinated Musiq and their response was the following. What does a music producer do? My answer is pretty much the same too. We have fun making music and getting paid thousands of dollars doing. Of course that’s the simple answer but it’s the truth. I don’t consider myself a beat maker anymore. I get paid to produce music now so that makes me a professional. I love controlling how a musical audio piece is going to be arranged. I live for it.

This is a question many people ask when looking to get into music production as a career.

The answer is thousands of dollars. I personally made $21,488.60 in month in August 2008 and make well over $12,000 monthly on a consistent basis. The funny thing about that is I’m not even a major producer. I’m just a guy that bang beats and sells them on the Internet.

The above income number is very small compared to some other producers in the market. That means whatever you want it to be is up to you.

Unless you have been under a rock I’m sure you have heard of chopped and screwed.

To be honest I don’t like it at all. The DJ who first aired a mix with the screwed up mix live of a mainstream artist got a lot of love though. This was the birth of a new type music for hip hop fans to ride to.

Dallas and Houston have the majority of the best beat makers. That’s not leaving out Fort Worth or places like San Antonio which have great tracks too. It’s just that Texas is so large and the concentration seems to be focused in Dallas and Houston.

Mainly the Swisher House Camp.

Committed to what you ask. Helping them make money. Free production music will not create wealth and I was trapped in that mode for a long time.

I wanted to be in an engineering program but couldn’t afford it. So now that I’m getting paid I want to give back to those that are in the position I was in years ago.

Don’t get me wrong though I do a little royalty free production every blue moon. I use it to gather new clients on my email list.

Natural talent has a lot to do with it. Most never have an actual degree. At least that what it seems like in my circle of production friends. Between us all we know video production all the way down to World or arabic music tracks.

That’s the fun thing about producing. You never know what you are going to come up with.

Well that answer is simply YES! It may not have been this way if I would have kept up free music production. I was producing beats for friends in the neighborhood who all wanted to be stars.

I was quickly associated by their parents as the guy that does all the music. I love being an independent producer. Not that the majors are not good. It’s just that I love working with people without huge egos.
